A COMPASS NAMED LOVE
by Jonathan E. Kiser
Life was an endless mystery for Betty you see.
She had to pay much for what was given as free.
Whether she could keep it- she had no guarantee.
The only thing she had was a compass named Love.
It only pointed at a path as it is what it does best.
How she proceeded from there was Life's true test.
She was never told who to love or what to accept.
Her direction was all she knew and what she had kept.
Many a cause for her laughter or why she had wept.
Never meaning harm to others she stole upon a road.
Where she met Fate and asked just what she had owed.
"Others, you will give me" Fate's eager reply flowed.
Betty understood the bargain, but did what she could.
Trying to protect her children as any mother would.
She braved many storms with a fall but quickly stood.
It's perfectly human for others to make a mistake.
But when she did it she would for sure take the cake!
She would oft' deny the wrong she was about to make.
See clearly in Betty's mind she could do no wrong.
She simply wanted to know others and to belong.
Beckoning for her children's love was her only song.
So, if you knew her sense of victory or blunder.
She did it all in despite of any known wonder.
Never worrying about losing her facetious thunder.
We can say she did a good job for just look at us.
No need to engage a debate or fight or to fuss.
Sure she had help, you say, but that was a plus!
She had a long hard life filled with such stress.
I don't know how I would do if I were her I confess.
Especially in the wisdom that she did possess.
We had some really good times and shared some joy.
Whether it was playing in a park or getting a toy.
As we grew it was often a new girl or new boy!
But we can say that compass she held in her hand.
Was the thing that we could all firmly understand.
She wanted us to use it as she had planned.
Fate called on her as all of us will know is true.
She wanted to know she did the best that she could do.
Fate claimed, "Nobody does, now it is through."
Her hand held on tightly as she could to Love.
But she soon had released it and left it here, thereof.
So who among us will take it without a deft shove?
Isn't it true if we all look closely and compare.
Open your hand and look intently with a stare.
A compass will appear as a gift for you to bare.
So until Fate calls on you, use Love as your guide.
So when Fate calls for you, no need to run or hide.
True love can be passed on to others; if only you decide.
