Obituary posted by : MARCIA SMITH , SPOUSE | Person Description | Gilbert Eugene Smith was born on November 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, New York passed from this life on October 13, 2009 due to stomach disease after surviving lung cancer in 2007. He is survived and greatly missed by his loving wife, Marcia and brothers Temonious and Edward, brother-in-law Khaalid, Nephew-in-Law Gabriel, Aunt Blanche, Cousins Donna, Pat, David, Mike, Ricky, Mark, Millicent, Nellie and extended family in North Carolina, Virginia and New York and as a multitude of friends and neighbors.
| Preceding him to Heaven were his parents Eva and Walter, and brothers Bernard and Reginald. Gilbert was a happy, compassionate, generous and loving soul. You always knew when he was in the room and always missed at any family event he did not attend. Gil made you laugh with an insane sense of humor, and he will always be remembered with joy and a smile. He was always there for anyone if was possible for him to help. He married Marcia McDonnaugh on October 13, 1989, a happy marriage which lasted until his passing on their 20th Wedding Anniversary within minutes of the time they were married. Although they had no children, his Abyssinian cats, Abbey and Abu Simbel, had his heart. Over the years, worked as a community outreach worker assisting Harlem churches and senior citizen centers and facilities. He also worked the field of housing security. Gilbert was a Third Degree Mason and once a member of Boyer Lodge #1 of the Prince Hall Masonic Temple. He was once a long-time member of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem.
